Creating Your Own Crochet Style

Do you have a favorite crochet designer? Many of us do. Perhaps you are drawn to Katherine White's use of color, or the way Patricia Kristoffersen intricately combines her stitches. You may even be able to spot a new design from your favorite without seeing the name listed in the credits. We are all attracted to designs which speak to our own creative sensibilities.

By selecting patterns that we are drawn to, we are beginning to express our own personal style. But by adding our own special touches, we can create an item that is uniquely ours. Instead of making a doily in the cream color pictured in the magazine, try using your favorite shade of lavender, maybe working the last round in purple. It can be fun to experiment with unusual color combinations; crocheting a small doily in turquoise and red can make a big statement with a mimimum amount of effort.

But color is not the only way to express your personality in crochet. Adding design elements to existing patterns is a great way to give them your personal touch. Perhaps you are drawn to butterflies; try appliqueing a small crocheted butterfly to a plain doily. Have you ever tried crocheting with beads? Next time you make a favorite pattern, work in tiny pearls or glass beads to accent the stitches. You will be surprised at what a difference they will make in the finished doily. Even something as simple as weaving a pretty ribbon through the stitches of a round or two can give a doily your own special style.

You might even want to create a collection of your special doilies for your Etsy shop the way clothing designers do, perhaps changing them out with the seasons or for the holidays.

But no matter how you change or enhance a pattern, remember to always work the stitches evenly and do all the finishing work. Make sure all the ends are neatly worked in and the doily is blocked to its best advantage. Professional workmanship is a vitally important part of creating your own personal style. Your customers will thank you for creating items that are not only beautiful, but which are of the highest quality.

Set your personal standards high, in both quality and beauty, and you will soon be creating items that will have customers returning to your shop again and again!

December 2009 Thread Artist of the Month

For December 2009, our Thread Artist of the Month is ....

ziemabir by Birute Ziem

And a little about herself and her Thread Crochet from Birute Ziem --

I love crocheting! I was introduced to the thread and the hook when I was 6 or 7 years old. Since I was a baby I saw my mother and grandmother crocheting and knitting each evening.

And then I learned first to crochet the string only, I was doing it like a mile and remember dreaming to do it a lot. As if someone would need for it like a mile -- and I could do it forever.

That was my dream as a little girl ... Which in 20 years became true, just that now I am selling lots of flowers instead of just strings.

This tablecloth is crocheted using a very old pattern. One of my friends asked me to fix her grandmothers old tablecloth which is very important for her as a relic. And I loved the pattern so much, that I decided to make one. And it looks amazing made from Ecru mercerized cotton.

I saw these daffodils online, and I got thrilled, I needed to try to make them!

This butterfly I learned to crochet first from my grandmother - then I was only 10 years old. And I remember each time while she was crocheting, how much fun it was being around her.

November 2009 THREAD ARTIST

And Our November 2009 THREAD ARTIST is ...

BellaCrochet by Elizabeth Ann White

Many of Ann's designs pictured here are available in her Etsy shop!

And this is what Elizabeth Ann White has to say herself about her Thread Crochet - including her own designs that she has created!!

"From the first time I saw a dainty pansy doily that my grandmother had crocheted (I must have been about 3), I knew I had to make crocheted lace."

"As a teenager, I eagerly learned the basics of crochet from my mother and began creating my own designs."

"What started as a hobby quickly became a passion, which then led to my career as a designer."

"I love creating vintage-look designs (especially doilies), and I consider it the greatest of complements for someone to tell me 'My grandmother used to make crocheted things just like you do.' "

"However, it is my pet peeve to have someone to say to me 'Oh, crochet, that is a dying art!' How little do they know! That is why I feel so fortunate to be a member of the Etsy Thread Artists; to be able to associate with talented crocheters who love the art of crochet as I do, and who understand that not only is crochet a thriving art, it is among the most beautiful art forms of all!"
